Everybody likes the Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts.” You know. . .’Tis a gift to be simple. It’s become the unofficial “theme song” of the voluntary simplicity movement. (Francis of Assisi is our “patron saint, ” a powerful icon of simple, faithful living.)4-A0755

OK, budding poets, here’s a challenge. Come up with your own words. Could be a fun family activity. Here are the original words and the tune.

New Words for “Simple Gifts”

Some other folks have already tried it and you can read their efforts. Some are short and practical, like this one:

Tis a gift to use it up.
Tis a gift to wear it out.
Tis a gift to make it do,
And even better, do without.

Some are deeper.

You could sing or recite your versions.

Tis a gift to get nothing so your hand can be free
To love and to do and always be dust-free
Invest in yourself and be happy
And give what you were meant to be
