Simple Living Works!

Archive for December 2013

1-A21522013 was the 40th year of Alternatives’ service. We celebrated in modest ways, such as starting the Simple Living Works! Podcast. Of special interest is episode #3, The Saga of Simply Enough. For more about the 40th, read the annual report.

In the process of getting copies of our resources to the ELCA Archives for safekeeping, we found some historic photos, which I uploaded to the SLW! site in our Short History. Of special curiosity might be A/V stories done by others about Alternatives, the hymn written upon my retirement, and moving the Earth Dome (called 2003: A Dome Odyssey – don’t miss the closing credits).

For a brief summary of how Alternatives closed in 2011, before being revived as Simple Living Works!, read “What’s Happened to Simple Living” or listen to SLW! Podcast episode #1.

3-A2857The twelve days of Christmas lead up to Epiphany (Jan. 6), the “showing forth” when the three Wise Ones presented gifts to Jesus.

During those twelve days is Holy Innocents Day (or the Slaughter of the Innocents), Dec. 28, quite a contrast to the preposterous twelve gifts that have been stretched into religious symbols and that are used to promote consumerism now.

Check out these thought-provoking resources.

nicholas&santaOne Christmas, my mother bought a plastic Santa to put on the top of the tree. I didn’t think much of it. When my Dad saw it, he quietly insisted that it come down. After all, he was the Sunday School Superintendent. Mother replaced Santa with a Christmas star. That incident had a profound effect on me. As greedy as I was as a youngster, I got the point that we celebrate Jesus’ birth, not the coming of Santa Claus.

Later, one of my sisters became a Jehovah’s Witness. Wow, was that a shocker for a conservative Lutheran family! That group does not celebrate much of anything, so her family stopped coming for Christmas. My mother bought my sister a little book, “Why I Believe in Santa Claus.” It was a lot like the famous newspaper column “Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus.”

I feel now that we have much better symbols of Christmas and giving than Santa, who has been completely taken over by commercial interests to sell us more stuff. We have Jesus giving himself to us and the Three Magi giving gifts to Jesus. We have St. Nicholas, who gave gifts to the needy. Let’s not confuse our children with Santa. Let’s tell the real stories of our faith.
