IMG_4450The response to my blog “Why Are Danes So Happy?” has been AMAZING. Thank you!

Why Are Danes So Happy? The Danes are considered to be the happiest people on Earth. Outwardly they don’t appear especially happy. That’s because their happiness is not a shallow veneer. It is an inner contentedness. And why? READ MORE

I especially enjoyed this blog/email update as I too come from Danish stock and used to live in Copenhagen while I was young. Incidentally, my father (Bob McNamara) served as the pastor at the International Church of Copenhagen in the 1980s. Fun to notice the small world of connections we live in! I was able to visit Denmark again a few years ago with my family and was so struck by the quality of life there.

Thanks for your good work and I always enjoy the updates!

Warmly,

Wow! Hurray for the Danes!

Thanks for posting this, Gerald! I’ll be reposting. I find this inspiring in the otherwise consistently sad news about human society, the environment & the rich-poor divide.

The one European city all my immediate family has been in, though not at the same time. I have observed something similar in the neighboring socialist state of Sweden – nowhere did one see outlandish homes that put other ones to shame. There was an observed evenness in the culture and communities.

Nice piece on Danish happiness by my friend Gerald “Jerry” Iversen!

I like the fact that you point out it’s about contentness not happiness. Happiness is experienced briefly, contentness is a state of the mind the majority of the time.

I think the most important point you make is the need to shift from consumerism to contentedess. We will never find happiness in constantly striving for more goods and services.

IMG_4691Rita and I are proud to be Danish-Americans. Both of us come from Danish stock, so we paid tribute to The Motherland by visiting Copenhagen with daughter Elysha for a week this spring.

[Photo: We three share an ice cream with Ron Rentner, a school mate of mine at Concordia, Oakland, Calif. in the ’60’s. Ron — in the black shirt — serves as pastor of the International Church of Copenhagen.]

The Danes are considered to be the happiest people on Earth. Outwardly they don’t appear especially happy. That’s because their happiness is not a shallow veneer. Their’s is an inner contentedness.

And why? Largely because Denmark is a Socialist Democracy. They have little of the gross economic inequality that America has. They willingly pay high taxes and it really works. Copenhagen is on track to be the first carbon neutral capital by 2020!

Prices seem higher there than in the U.S. They pay a 25% VAT (value added tax) on everything. Ouch! you may think. The VAT is already in the price, not added to it, as our sales tax is. We in the U.S. also pay additional fees that they don’t pay. An obvious example is tipping. Here we pay 15-20% for service. Tipping is not expected in Denmark because SERVERS ARE PAID A LIVING WAGE.

I recommend my interview with John De Graaf, co-author and producer of the Affluenza videos and books. He is co-founder of the Happiness Initiative. Though he focuses on Bhutan, his insights are relevant to Denmark as well. (Read my blog posts on The Geography of Bliss and Global Happiness Initiative.)

Why be concerned about happiness? One big reason would be that we Americans need to redefine happiness, away from consumerism toward contentedness. Why? Human civilization will go through immense trauma (some say extinction) by 2100. Let’s prepare ourselves, our children and grandchildren for the change now. Yes, we can mitigate some of the worst effects through simple, green living but we cannot reverse the inevitable through geo-engineering or magical, wishful thinking. (See my blog post Vision of the Future.)

7-A1280

“Tax the Rich” is probably the quickest, most direct way out of our economic woes. FDR did that and it worked, in combination with an amazing jobs program, such as the Youth Conservation Corps, and raising the minimum wage.

Now I see that greed of the really rich – the 1% — may accomplish what decades of encouragement have failed to do – to get Americans to adopt voluntary simplicity as an effective and satisfying lifestyle.

Now rampant social inequity is forcing millions into INvoluntary simplicity, something familiar to 2/3rds of the world, the majority in the “developing” world. In their case they live from one day to the next without choice.

I say this with no delight. The transition will be long and painful. The really rich few will continue to grow richer thanks to their lap dogs in D.C. and many states, who continue to crank out laws that favor them. And the majority of the rest of us are too short-sighted, too gullible, too controlled by right-wing religious “leaders” to vote in our own interests.

Sadly, this forced adoption of simpler living will be good practice for the implosion of the Earth’s environment which is scheduled to begin about 2050. Our children and grandchildren of today will be ready for the truly harsh realities of the second half of this century. No technology, no wishful thinking will save us from the Great Implosion. We cannot count on God to rescue us.

Voluntary simplicity is not about deprivation. INvoluntary simplicity IS.

The best we may be able to do is to change our personal lives so that the Great Implosion happens more gradually and with less negative force. We can vote for those who have a vision of caring for the Earth and NOT of economic “growth,” which just continues to devour the Earth. The Green Party has the vision but currently not the infrastructure to do what needs to be done. Anyone who votes for a libertarian or Tea Party candidate has no one but themselves to blame for the misery of their grandchildren.

No, I am not proposing Survivalism, where we hoard and arm ourselves. I’m preaching COMMUNITARIANISM — no, not Communism – wherein we work for the benefit of our community before our own personal “rights.”

#9. Internet Radio

SL101

My initial plan for reviving Alternatives as Simple Living Works! included an Internet Radio program. Afterall, I had been a professional beggar for public radio for 18 years and raised millions of dollars!

Numerous radio and TV programs — over-the-air, cable, satellite, commercial, non-commercial — are now released as podcasts. Some of them are call-in shows, which gives them the connectedness of social media. In some cases, radio hosts invite response, like Tony Campolo’s ‘Across the Pond,’ but he rarely if ever reads or responds to listener comments during the show. (Tony’s broadcast in UK, South Africa and Australia, but not the U.S.) Other shows, like TheCommonGoodPodcast.com and Simple Living Works! Podcast, both of which I host and produce, invite listener response and we read and respond to the comments on future programs. Unlike a call-in show, the response is delayed, not immediate.

Internet radio has numerous outlets — several networks each of which include numerous channels that have many programs.

The reason I haven’t gotten into internet radio yet is that in most cases the programs have to be an exact length to fit into a time slot.

So much of AM radio has been taken over by right-wingers, that it’s mostly an intellectual desert. Most channels of internet radio have quite specialized subjects, so, as with podcasts, they have limited, niche audiences. Many of them focus on health, especially alternative health, and on New Age themes.

Most of the internet radio networks are commercial. In some cases, the show host pays for his/her time but in most cases, the channels carry ads that are not related to the show content. In some cases, the various channels carry the same ads, so that the advertiser gets a variety of listeners.

Many internet radio channels and shows are regular over-the-air radio programs also carried on the internet. You can get thousands — yes, 14,000 at latest count — of radio stations of many types — mostly music but some talk — from around the world on iTunes. I love classical music and get over 200 channels there, some commercial jukeboxes, some public radio.

If you’re interested in internet radio, which you can listen to on your computer or smart phone, try BlogRadio.com, VoiceAmerica.com and HealthyLiving.com. I’m not recommending any of these. I prefer podcasts, which rarely have commercials, except a few hosts pitch for funds to keep their show going. If they do have commercials, I fast-forward through them.

You can try internet radio for your cause. But remember: 1. You must first qualify to get a time slot, which may be lousy, though with an international reach, midnight is noon somewhere, and in most cases, your show is repeated; 2. You must produce a show every week on time, either live or pre-recorded; 3. You have to develop an audience. Yes, some listeners may stay tuned from the show preceding yours, and the channel will usually run promos, but it’s up to you to use your other social media to build an audience. 4. If you want call-ins, you may have to line them up ahead of time or be embarrassed if you get none, especially early-on.

  • Why Are Danes So Happy? The Danes are considered to be the happiest people on Earth. Outwardly they don’t appear especially happy. That’s because their happiness is not a shallow veneer. It is an inner contentedness. And why? Largely because Denmark is a Socialist Democracy. They have little of the gross economic inequality that America has. They willingly pay high taxes and it really works. Copenhagen is on track to be the first carbon neutral capital by 2020! Why be concerned about happiness? One big reason would be that we Americans need to redefine happiness, away from consumerism toward contentedness. Why? Human civilization will go through immense trauma (some say extinction) by 2100. Let’s prepare ourselves, our children and grandchildren for the change now. RAMADAN:
Month-Long Fast for Muslims

June 28 – July 27, 2014

Ramadan, commemorating the revelation of the Koran to Mohammed, is the most sacred celebration in the Muslim world. The observance begins on the eve of the ninth month of the lunar year. Since the lunar year is eleven or twelve days shorter than the solar year, the incidence of Ramadan moves through all the seasons of the year in cycles of approximately 33 years. (In 1987 Ramadan began on April 29; in 2000 on Nov. 27; in 2010 on Aug. 11; in 2015 on June 18, etc.)

Celebrated for 30 days, the observance affects a large portion of the Third World. According to Islamic law, fasting from sunup to sundown is required of every able-bodied Muslim.

The fasting is meant to 1) help keep the observance in mind, 2) encourage spiritual discipline, 3) create an identification with the poor and 4) remind people of their ultimate dependence on God.

Popular celebrations of Ramadan sometimes involve lavish feasts after the sun goes down, but this custom does not represent the holiday’s true spirit, to bring about inner strength through austerity.

Learning About Our Neighbors

Because Islam is a religious tradition little understood by most Westerners, perhaps during this fast, non-Muslims can use this time to learn more. During dinner one evening, identify popular stereotypes of Muslims. Then do some reading. Search out not only nonfiction, but also poetry and fiction written by Muslims. Make the acquaintance of some Muslims in your community. Then, at another family meal one evening, try to go beyond the stereotypes to real people.

You may wish to invite Muslim people to a community gathering as guest speakers. Find out if your religious community has an interfaith council and learn about interfaith gatherings in your community.

Blog Post #8 – Podcasting

A podcast is a way to reach people who’d rather listen than read, like me, either because of preference or because of failing eyesight. It is considered an extension of blogging, an audio/video blog. (Even for reading I prefer the internet to books because I can blow the type up as large as I need it.)

iTunes just passed 1 Billion podcast subscribers, not downloads. It’s no longer something just for geeks. iTunes distributes about half of all the podcasts. All the other services have the other half. Stitcher is for mobile devices.

The length; the frequency; scripted or outlined; solo, co-hosts or guests are all questions to ask before starting a podcast. I think 30-40 minutes is an ideal length because I like to listen while I’m exercising or biking. Anything longer and I have to listen in sessions. Some podcasters are far too self-indulgent and ramble on for an hour or more. Some are once a month, some once a week. Consistency is important for developing and maintaining an audience. Listeners develop expectations. Some podcasters produce an episode whenever they’re in the mood. I find that inconsiderate. I produce three podcast episodes a month.

I script my episodes because I’m an editor a heart. I want my episodes to be concise. I don’t want to waste my listeners’ time. Some hosts use an outline effectively.

SLW! is a solo podcast with occasional guests. TheCommonGoodPodcast.com uses co-hosts and always one interviewee. I prefer not to improvise.

A podcast must have Show Notes! They include a basic outline of the episode and links to all sites you mention in the episode. If you expect people to take notes while they listen, you’re crazy. Don’t even consider a podcast without Show Notes.

I do two podcasts: SLW! as host and producer, and TheCommonGoodPodcast.com with Jubilee-Economics.org as co-host and producer.

Each one has five steps. Here are short descriptions:

1. Planning. We use Google Chrome g-mail for connection and Google Drive for viewing and editing planning documents by all members of the team at the same time.

2. Scripting/Outlining. Also Google Drive.

3. Recording. We use Hindenburg from Denmark because we like the features and business model. It costs, but there’s a discount for non-profits. Visit HindeburgSystems.com. Other popular, free recording/editing systems include Audacity and Garageband.

4. Editing. Same.

5. Show Notes. I use WordPress.org – basic is free and sufficient. (I use WordPress.com, also free, for my blog. Same company, different uses.) The plug-in for podcasts on .org is PowerPress.

6. Uploading. I upload to Liberated Syndication – known as LibSyn – for storing. You can us it for Show Notes and distribution. I prefer to use PowerPress because it has more features, including the design or Theme or look of the Show Notes. LibSyn offers several plans: from $5/mo. for 50 megs to $15/mo. for 250 megs. I pay $7/month for 50 megs plus statistics so that I can follow the number of downloads per month.

The DETAILS for podcasting are extensive. They’re at the bottom of the site page when you’re ready for them.
