What’s NOW with SLW!
- In the Steps of St. Paul -Rita and I had the pleasure of traveling to Greece (and a bit of Turkey) this spring. We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. . . about five years late. Two new grandchildren kept changing our plans! We visited the sites where St. Paul planted early Christian churches, and for whom epistles in the New Testament are named – Thessaloniki, Philippi, Corinth, Ephesus.
A main incentive of such a tour for Simple Livers is the Life Standard “Learn from the World Community.” Other ways to learn are through Fair Trade, food and music. The five Life Standards of Living More with Less sometimes require trade-offs. Such a trip rubs up against “Cherish the Natural Order,” because they tend to be environmentally stressful, and against “Do Justice!” - SUBSCRIBE for free through iTunes, Stitcher.com or your favorite podcast service.

In the Steps of St. Paul
Posted May 11, 2015
on:Rita and I had the pleasure of traveling to Greece (and a bit of Turkey) this spring. We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. . . about five years late. Two new grandchildren kept changing our plans!
We traveled with 25 California Central Coast Lutherans and eleven Tennessee United Methodists. The eleven day trip – half bus and half cruise – was organized through E.O. – Educational Opportunities, a non-profit organization. Several leaders, mostly pastors, recruited participants. Russ Gordon was bus captain. Carl and Susan Nielsen were trip hosts. Carl is a also an energetic professional photographer and videographer who captures the sites for E.O.
We visited the sites where St. Paul planted early Christian churches, and for whom epistles in the New Testament are named – Thessaloniki, Philippi, Corinth, Ephesus. (Ten couples renewed their wedding vows in Corinth. Remember the love poem in I Cor. 13?) We also visited the extraordinary monasteries/nunneries perched atop monoliths at Meteora, and the Coliseum and Parthenon in Athens.
Yes, such a trip does put St. Paul’s work in context. Most of the sites are larger and more sophisticated than I had imagined. Despite its economic woes, Greece continues to maintain wonderful museums and to restore historic ruins.
Interesting contrast. The merchants in Greece were friendly but reserved. In Turkey they were aggressive.
A main incentive of such a tour for Simple Livers is the Life Standard “Learn from the World Community.” Common ways to learn are through Fair Trade, food and music. The five Life Standards of Living More with Less sometimes require trade-offs. Such a trip rubs up against “Cherish the Natural Order,” because they tend to be environmentally stressful, and against “Do Justice!” because cruise lines are notoriously unfair to cruise workers. The cruises are also inherently wasteful, most noticeably food and consumables.
Rita plans to offer a program this fall to church groups based on the tour. She’s writing her daily journal and processing my photos now. If/when it’s uploaded to the internet, I’ll post a link.

April Is Financial Literacy Month
Financial Literacy and Media Literacy are two of the pillars of SLW! In additional to Jeff’s podcast comments (above), here are more helps:
Financial Literacy Month official site
“SLW! Recommends” Literacy Project on Financial Literacy/Consumerism
Financial Literacy Month? Don’t Be Fooled: A solution to this ongoing crisis is emerging courtesy of the FoolProof Foundation’s Walter Cronkite Project. The project is offering a financial literacy curriculum that works. It is free, no strings attached — right now, to all teachers and educators. The curriculum is extensive — it offers up to 22 hours of financial literacy training, all turn-key for the teacher/mentor.
Making a Difference: Being Wise with Money using the Save-Spend-Share formula. Thrivent Financial is the nation’s largest fraternal organization. A merger of Lutheran Brotherhood and Aid Association for Lutherans, Thrivent now serves all Christians and distributes part of its profits through its members to any qualified 501-c-3, non-profit organization. (Disclaimer: Rita and I have all our retirement funds in Thrivent. Thrivent does not distribute funds to organizations that it considers “divisive.”)

We do not solicit or accept donations, nor do we sell anything. All our resources and services are free of charge. We’re an all-volunteer organization. Instead, we urge Alternative Giving. Give away at least 25% of what you spent last year on all celebrations – Christmas, birthdays, etc. — to local, national and international causes.

Through social media, we extend the mission and resources of the non-profit organization Alternatives, 1973-2011. Simple Living Works! web site home page | Theme/Seasons Index. To learn more about SLW! – our MISSION, for example — please listen to our getting-acquainted episodes, especially #1 and 2. We produce a half-hour podcast twice a month, hopefully educational and inspiring for you, your family and your congregation or group. We blog several times a week.
